|Westbrook Dance Academy Class Descriptions
Pre-School Classes-Ages 2 to 5
Creative Movement (Ages 2 & 3) 45 Minutes Weekly:
A Creative movement class introduces children to music and movement. Games, dance, and
music will develop basic motor skills, rhythm, and imagination. Students will perform one
routine in our spring performance.
Pre-School Dance (Ages 3-5) 1 Hour Weekly:
This class is geared to develop the basics of Ballet and Tap technique. Geared to develop
imagination, coordination, and social skills, this is a fun and exciting class for this age group.
Two dances will be performed in our spring performance.
Children & Teen Classes
I: (ages 5-7) II: (ages 7-9) III: (ages 10-12) IV: (ages 13-14) V: (ages 14-up)
Combination Class (ages 6-8) - 1 ½ Hours Weekly:
This is a continuation of Ballet and Tap with an addition to Jazz. This allows older students to
continue their introduction to dance technique. This program is designed to increase
confidence as well as strength and flexibility. These dancers will perform three routines in
our spring performance.
Ballet - II-Adult
Ballet is the foundation for all dance training. Although this class is not required, it is highly
recommended for all students. Students will learn proper alignment of the body, strength,
flexibility, vocabulary, proper technique and grace.
Pointe - IV-V
Pointe: This class in a continuation of ballet technique. This class is only studied when a
dancer has developed the proper strength in the legs and feet. Only students 11 years old and
above may be eligible for this class. Any student taking this class must take their regular
ballet class in addition to this one.
Tap- II - Adult
Tap: Tap is a percussive class that uses tap technique with or without music. Students will
learn vocabulary and the different styles of tap during their classes as well as the history of
tap. This class will develop rhythm, timing, and musicality. It is recommended that a jazz or
ballet class be taken in addition to tap.
Jazz: This class will improve a student’s flexibility, strength and coordination using different
styles of jazz (theater dance and hip-hop) with a variety of music. This is a fast paced class
that will develop endurance and rhythm.
Lyrical III - V
Lyrical: This class is a combination of ballet, jazz, and modern. This style of dance tells a
story using many different types of music while using technique, strength and grace. This
class will increase flexibility, control and the ability of using emotion to tell a story.
Hip-Hop II - V
Hip-Hop: Hip-Hop is a fast paced class that is very upbeat using the hottest dance moves.
This is a fun but challenging class and is always an exciting addition to our spring
Acro I - V
Acro: Very similar to gymnastics but with no equipment. Students will learn basic tumbling
skills incorporated with dance training. Students will increase flexibility, timing, rhythm, and
coordination. Mats will be used in this class for protection.
Zumba is a popular fitness program inspired by Latin dance. Using upbeat Latin music
together with cardiovascular exercise, Zumba is aerobic dancing that is lots of fun and easy
to learn. The class incorporates several dance styles, including cumbia, merengue, salsa,
reggaeton, mambo, rumba, flamenco, and calypso and Salsaton.
Want to spice up your week with great exercise, great music, and new partner dancing
skills? In this class, we will alternate dancing in a group and dancing with a partner as we
play a variety of upbeat, heart-pumping music that you’ll love! You’ll learn it all, and have a
blast! No partner or dance experience required. Please come dressed comfortably.
Taste of Ballroom
Have you wanted to find out what ballroom dance is like but not sure where to start? Come
learn the basic steps of 3 dance styles! Swing, Tango, Waltz. Feel the magic of dancing in
partnership and see which style is your favorite – you’ll love them all! This class will be
accessible for all – no experience required. Build confidence, keep active, and have fun!
Bring a partner and double your fun. Please dress comfortably.
