The Westbrook Dance Academy Competition Teams recently returned
from the Step Up To Dance National Competition in Manchester, New
Hampshire on July 6 – July 10, 2011 where they took home over 25
awards, several overalls, and national championships.
The Senior Competition Team dance “Coffee in a Cardboard Cup” was
crowned national champion. The dance scored a high platinum and was
first out of over 150 group dances. The Senior Competition Team
Members, Kelsey C. Morgan C. Juliana M., and Merilee S. all hail from
Westbrook. The two other Senior dances “Heartburn” and “The Ladder”
placed in the top 15.
The duo of Kelsey C. and Morgan C. “Time of Your Life” scored a
platinum and was second runner up of all duos/trios.
The Teen Competition Team dance “Bollywood” scored a platinum and
was fifth runner up out of 150 groups. The Teen Competition Team
members Morgan C., Holly S., and Kali R. are from Westbrook, Alissa
M. is from East Lyme. The Teen Team’s two other dances “Can’t Say
No” and “Dear Friend” placed in the top five in their respective categories.
The Junior Competition Team, Victoria H. of Westbrook, Brandi A. of
Westbrook, Mara K. of Old Saybrook, and Miles W. of Clinton had
High Gold performances and with their dances “Walking on Sunshine,”
“Hey Mickey,” and “Let Your Heart Sing.”
The Petite Team, Megan G. of Westbrook, Kaylene K. of Clinton, Claire
P. of Clinton, and Alexandra L. of Westbrook scored a High Gold in their
dance “Little Red Riding Hood,” and were first runner-up in their category.
In the 15-17 solo category, Morgan C. scored a platinum and was fifth
runner up. Kelsey C. placed eighth. Juliana M's jazz solo placed 23rd.
Each dance was in the top 2 in its respective category. Juliana M's
musical theater solo won its category, while Alissa M. (lyrical) and
Merilee S. placed in the top five in their categories.
In the 11-12 solo category, Victoria H. earned a high gold and gold for
her solos. Miles W. and Brandi A. earned High Golds. Each finished in
the top 4 in their respective categories.
In the 9-10 solo category, Mara K. earned a gold.
In the title division, Brandi A. won the Broadway Audition, Fashion
Model and Photo. She was also first runner-up in Formal Wear. Miles W.
won the Male Photo. Meagan G. was first runner-up in Photo. Juliana M.
and Alissa M. finished second and third respectively in Dance Diva.
Juliana M. was also a finalist in the Dance Spirit Award sponsored by
Dance Spirit Magazine.
